Dumpster rental prices by size

Published dumpster prices disagree a lot, because each source measures something different. Some are averages of local quotes; others are a broker’s all-inclusive delivered price. Here is what three current sources say, side by side, and the range our calculator uses.

SizeDumpsters.com (Oct 2026)Fixr (Jan 2025)Thumbtack (Mar 2026)Range we use
10 yd$329–$1,307 (avg $586)$250–$400—$250–$586
15 yd$306–$1,334 (avg $609)——$306–$609

40 yd$516–$1,613 (avg $906)$350–$900$421 avg$350–$906

Thumbtack puts the national average at $350–$564, with most people paying about $442 (March 2026). Dumpsters.com’s prices are higher across the board because they bundle delivery, pickup, disposal, a weight allowance and the rental period into one price.

What’s in the price, and what isn’t

A typical quote bundles delivery, pickup, a rental period (often 7–14 days) and disposal up to a weight allowance. The add-ons below are where final bills grow.

FeeTypical rangeSources
Weight overage$40–$100 per ton (we default to $75)Fixr, HomeGuide, Discount Dumpster
Extra rental days$5–$15 per day (we default to $10)Fixr, Thumbtack
Street permit$10–$100, only if the container sits on a public streetFixr

Five ways to keep the bill down

  1. Get the weight right, not just the size. Ask how many tons are included and what each extra ton costs. Then check your load with the weight calculator.
  2. Don’t mix heavy debris into a general load. Concrete, dirt and brick reach a weight limit long before the container is full.
  3. Book the right number of days. Extra days are cheap individually ($5–$15 each in the sources we checked) but add up on a slow project.
  4. Keep it off the street if you can. A driveway placement usually avoids a permit.
  5. Compare at least three quotes that list the same things: size, days, included tons and the overage rate.
Methodology

How we calculate

Every number in the calculator comes from these steps and the data below. The page runs the same numbers you see here.

  1. Base price = the typical range for the size you choose (table below).
  2. Overage = max(0, expected tons − included tons) × the overage rate per ton.
  3. Extra days = max(0, rental days − 7) × the daily rate.
  4. Total = base price + overage + extra days + permit, shown as a low–high range.
  5. “High-cost markets” uses the top of Dumpsters.com’s published range for the size, plus the same add-ons.

Assumptions and limits

  • The low end of each range is the lowest published price we found (Fixr, or Dumpsters.com for 15-yard); the high end is Dumpsters.com’s October 2026 average.
  • Fixr’s figures date from January 2025, and prices have risen since; we keep them only as the low end of the range.
  • Included weight defaults to the most conservative allowance we found for each size, so the overage estimate errs on the cautious side. Replace it with your quote’s number.
  • We assume a 7-day base rental period. Many companies include 7–14 days, so adjust the rental length if yours includes more.
  • Sales tax, fuel surcharges and fees for prohibited items (tires, mattresses, appliances) are not included.

Dumpster rental cost FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster in 2026?

Thumbtack puts the national average at $350–$564, with most people paying about $442 (March 2026). Dumpsters.com’s all-inclusive averages run from $586 for a 10-yard to $906 for a 40-yard (October 2026).

How much is a 20-yard dumpster?

Our range for a 20-yard is $275–$679. Thumbtack’s average is $390; Dumpsters.com’s is $679, with a published range of $374–$1,362.

What are dumpster overage fees?

If the load weighs more than the allowance in your price, the hauler bills the extra by the ton. Fixr and HomeGuide put this at $40–$100 per ton; Discount Dumpster says a pro-rated $75 per ton is typical.

How much does it cost to keep a dumpster longer?

Extra days cost about $5–$10 each according to Fixr; Thumbtack’s example charges $15 per day after day 5.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster?

Usually only if it sits on a public street, sidewalk or alley. Fixr puts permits at $10–$100. A dumpster on your own driveway typically doesn’t need one, but rules vary by city.

Why do dumpster prices vary so much?

Location, landfill fees, the weight allowance, the rental period and whether delivery and disposal are bundled all change the price. Compare quotes that list the same size, days, included tons and overage rate.
